The rings
A clip point on each side
A gold D-ring sits in the tab on either side of the ball, just clear of the mouth. A lead, a tether or the clip off a collar will take it, which gives you somewhere to attach that is not the buckle.
Two rules go with them. Whatever is clipped on has to come off in a single movement, and nothing attached should ever be pulling on the head or taking weight. The rings are there to connect, not to hold anyone in place.

The strap closes through a gold pin buckle onto a row of punched holes, so the same piece shortens for a smaller head and opens out for a larger one. There is no stretch in it — the fit you buckle is the fit you get, which is exactly why the hole you pick matters more than it looks.

Using it without anything going wrong
A gag takes away speech, which is the signal most people are relying on. That one fact drives everything below, and none of it is optional.
- Agree a signal that is not a word. Something held in a hand and dropped, or three taps on the nearest hard surface. Agree out loud, beforehand, that it means stop — not slow down.
- Nobody is left alone in it. Not to answer the door, not for a minute. Stay in the room the entire time it is on.
- A finger has to fit underneath. Slide one between the strap and the cheek. If it will not go in, open the buckle a hole and try again.
- Breathing is through the nose only. This ball is solid and does not vent. A cold, blocked sinuses or bad allergies that night means leaving it in the drawer.
- Watch the breathing, not the clock. Faster, noisier or laboured and the buckle comes off straight away. Keep a hand near it so you are never fumbling for it.
- Nothing clipped to the rings takes weight. A lead is for guiding, not pulling. It comes off in one movement or it does not go on.
- Nothing to drink, nothing taken. Alcohol and drugs dull both judgement and the gag reflex, which are the two things that need to be working.
- Short stretches. It makes the jaw ache and it makes you drool. Both are normal and both are reasons to take it out, stretch, and come back to it.
If anything about the breathing changes, undo the buckle first and ask questions afterwards. There is no version of this where waiting is the better call.
Care
Cleaning it between uses
Wash the ball in warm water with a little unscented soap, rinse it and let it dry completely. Wipe the strap down with a damp cloth rather than soaking it, and dry the buckle and the rings rather than leaving them wet. Let the whole thing air before it goes back in a drawer.
Mouth gags are sealed for hygiene. Once the seal is broken this one cannot be returned.
