The drop is the point of it, so anything covering your back defeats the whole object. It wants an open back, a halterneck, a low scoop or a deep cowl — and ideally nothing between the chain and the skin, because the spikes are real points and they will find a thread in anything knitted, laced or loosely woven. Over a smooth satin or a tight jersey it is fine. Over a cable knit it is a mistake you only make once.

A silver-tone plating is thin by definition. What dulls it is not age but moisture, skin oils and perfume sitting on the surface between wears.
- Keep it dry
Off before showering, swimming or sleeping. Water gets under plating and stays there.
- Wipe after
A soft dry cloth down the links after each wear takes off the oils that do the damage.
- Perfume first
Spray, let it dry, then put the piece on. Alcohol strips plating faster than anything else.
- Store alone
Flat and on its own. The spikes will scratch anything you keep it next to.
